General Discussion / The two four-letter words Australians should stop using
« Last post by Diversity on July 16, 2017, 04:21:44 am »I don't get it, why some parts of the media are talking about about Australian language now. Starting with Aussie slangs Straya vs Australia, Struth, and other illiterate words to swear words.
In the first place not all Australians use these slangs, no where in the US or UK do those that speak english, [some would say the Queen's english] speak with the same accent or use words the same. So why do sectors of media want to enforce the myth that all Australians act and speak the same? Why do they feel the use of these, is some how a cultural identity as if it's under some threat? Why do they find the need to get visiting entertainers to say things with an Australian accent and teach them Aussie Slangs that aren't going to be used outside the country?
Then domestically media reports how we have slipped as nation in education! Why do we hold onto that convict past, because thats where those Aussie Slangs come; convicts used the term Dobber! No one in the english speaking language knew what Shirt Front meant.
On swearing, if those 4 letter words are found in the dictionary, they are meant to be used! Straya isn't found in the dictionary!
